Physical Education
INTENT
Physical Education teaches pupils to develop and understand the importance of health and physical fitness through activity and healthy eating for exercise. PE will develop confidence and self-esteem as well improving focus and stamina. All children will learn the benefits of competition especially through team sports to support the values of collaboration, sportsmanship, respect and motivation. Through dance and gymnastics, children will learn to control their body and express themselves through movement.
Skills and sports: Each year, the children will be provided with opportunities to learn a range of sports including the specific skills needed to be able to complete each unit with a final game/dance/routine. As part of this, the children will be expected to analyse their own and each other’s skills in order to find ways to improve.
Health: The children will improve their fitness levels and have a good understanding of the benefits of exercise on their bodies and minds. Throughout their schooling at MPL, the children will be expected to regularly assess their own fitness levels and consider ways to improve. It is essential that the pupils also learn through cross curricular activities about nutrition and the impact of that on their bodily and mental health. The children will also be given opportunities to reflect on their lunches and snacks.
Sportsmanship: We are committed to develop a culture where children are praising and encouraging one another throughout sporting activities. The children will have many opportunities to celebrate their peers for improving rather than just for winning. MPL will promote fundamental British values by celebrating our unique school more actively by teaching/watching/celebrating sporting events.
IMPLEMENTATION
Each lesson will follow the same structure:
Warm up | The children will warm up their muscles with an activity that links back to their previous learning. Sometimes the warm up will link to the daily run – teaching again the impact that pacing yourself can have on their overall performance. During warm ups, it should always be explained why we warm up our muscles. |
Teach | At the beginning of each unit, the children will be shown what a final game/dance/routine would look like, so that they know what they are aiming towards. As well as this, they will learn about the health benefits of the sport. The teacher will be the expert introducing a combination of new skills and techniques, including clear explanation of rules, tactics and strategies. This will provide links to previous learning. Each new skill will be expertly modelled with clear explanation alongside and a chance to ask questions. |
Practice/ Demonstrate | Working as teams, in groups or in pairs, pupils will practise each new skill building on previous learning. |
Apply | Children will be given a chance to use their new skills in some form of game or activity. They will be reminded and given an opportunity to show good sportsmanship and the MPL values. |
Cool down/stretch | Children will warm down and be reminded of the reasons why we do this and the impact on our bodies. |
At the end of each unit of learning, a PE session will involve a competitive game/routine/performance, with a chance to show and practise their good sportsmanship and MPL values. |
RESOURCES TO SUPPORT PE
Each lesson will have the sport equipment needed for not only the sport, but also the skill development if different. These will be ready at the start of each lesson. Children should all have a full PE kit, suitable for the weather, including sensible running shoes for the daily run.
IMPACT
Successful PE will see the children enjoying and participating in energetic and skill based activities a number of times a week. The children will improve their fitness levels and have a good understanding of the benefits of exercise. The children will also have a deeper understanding of the effect that nutrition combined with exercise will have on their bodies.

SPORTS WEEK
Towards the end of the summer term, all children will be given the opportunity to participate in a week of sport activities which will conclude with sports day events. These activities will further develop the children’s understanding of sportsmanship and allow them to work as teams and individually; always showing our school values of being brave and being kind.
